Living with Lymphoedema: Lawrence’s journey

Introduction
Meet Lawrence, a resilient person who has been navigating life with lymphoedema. In this article, Lawrence shares his journey from diagnosis to treatment, and the challenges and triumphs along the way.
Diagnosis and challenges
It wasn’t until 2009, at the age of 24, that Lawrence was officially diagnosed with lymphoedema. This diagnosis came after years of dealing with various health issues, including increased weight and thyroid problems, which all exacerbated the condition.
Treatment journey
Over the years, he has undergone numerous successful treatments for lymphoedema at Accelerate which include:
- Made to measure compression
- Bandaging
- Skin care management
- Activity advice
- Foot orthotics and braces
Adapting to a routine
Adapting to the treatment routine has been a challenge for Lawrence but he realises the benefits and importance of compression. The daily tasks of removing compression, washing, and creaming the skin can be overwhelming although he has grown accustomed to this routine over time. From stick-on bandages to compression garments, he has tried them all and now prefers his current made to measure compression garments and he feels stable in these at the moment.
A setback and a comeback
In 2019, Lawrence decided to get back into fitness and joined a local gym. Unfortunately, an accident on the treadmill led to a severe leg and ankle injury. He recalls:
I fractured my ankle and broke my tibia and fibula, and my ankle blew up like a balloon
The injury was so severe that Lawrence was close to losing his foot. Thanks to a successful operation, his foot was saved but he has metalwork in his ankle to stabilise his lower limb. Despite the injury, he has made significant progress in rehabilitation and with foot orthotics. While there is some discomfort in the joint, Lawrence remains positive and continues to work on his recovery and improving his mobility as this is a priority in treatment and for his wellbeing and he is back at the gym!
Conclusion
Lawrence’s story is one of resilience and determination. Despite the challenges of living with Lymphoedema and a severe ankle injury, he continues to push forward, adapting to new routines and treatments. His journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and how compression and self-care can be part of everyday living.
