LoCUS service evaluation goes live!

We are incredibly excited that the LoCUS (Localised compression for ulceration using strapping) service evaluation which went live on 3 February. Clinicians at our 11 study sites have now started to screen patients suitable for inclusion in the study. Provide CIC were the first site to enrol a patient into the study, followed closely by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
The LoCUS multi-centre study was launched in September 2024, in conjunction with L&R Medical, bringing together key opinion leaders from our 11 study sites across southern England.
What are the aims of the service evaluation?
The service evaluation involves looking at patients with peri-malleolar ulceration and whether the use of the Accelerate fan strapping technique can expedite healing. There is anecdotal evidence that this technique results in improved healing outcomes – the service evaluation will take place across sites already using this technique. Our aim is to increase the evidence base and enable data collection to inform pathways for effective use.
What has happened since the launch event?
Since the launch, the study team has provided refresher training on the Accelerate fan strapping to study site clinicians already competent in the technique to promote consistency in application.
We have been busy finalising project methodology, documentation and the forms that will be used to collect the data, with valued support from our key opinion leaders and study site clinicians.
I am very excited to be leading this project for Accelerate, after teaching this innovative technique on our Advanced Practice in Lower Limb Ulceration (APLLU) course since 2019. I look forward to reviewing the data as we commence recruitment across this multi-site study. Initial feedback will take place at our next quarterly meeting on 12 March so watch out for further news on our progress with the LoCUS study.
